What was the last movie/show you watched?

So I'm about 26 years late, but I'm watching the very first Final Destination movie since I see the movies are available on Tubi! I think every day this week (after I get home from work) I'll watch each FD movie in order. I'm always hearing people reference these movies, saying things like "Omg, that has Final Destination written all over it!"

tinyfrog and I are big into the MCU stuff, so clearly we are pumped about Doomsday this year.

We're going to try to do the proper prep for it by rewatching a specific list, in a specific order, of the existing movies and series episodes, plus the reworked End Game in theatres.

So we're starting with X-Men tonight.

I worked at Blockbuster when the first Final Destination was released. For those not in the know, Blockbuster employees had five free rentals a week to watch new releases or old movies so we could recommend them based on what people were looking forward to watching. FD came out and I rented it. Watched it at home by myself.

There's a vignette of a teacher who lives alone, had a hard day at school, came home and fixed herself a drink. She sets it on the top of her computer monitor. The drink condensates, slowly dripping water into the ventilation holes. The monitor sparks, catches on fire and chaos ensues and eventually she's knifed to death by her own butcher block from a series of unfortunate events.

The next day I'm lying in bed with my boyfriend when my computer monitor in the bedroom spontaneously catches fire and I absolutely lost it. LOL This kind of stuff happens to me all of the time. There is always some sort of weird parallel between the art I've consumed and the shenanigans in my actual life. I've never watched another FD since.

It was nice to see something a bit different than the usual suspense/thriller/horror stuff that's been coming out lately. I think the acting was great, and the main actress now has a role in the upcoming X-Men franchise, yay!

Probably not a movie id recommend because of Ryan Reynolds, the role could have been played by many actors or even removed completely while having very little impact on the movie as a whole.

Not factoring Ryan Reynolds it was alright it's not really the type of movie I like watching...sort of like a coming of age type but for a middle aged man? I don't know how to describe it.

I just finished the first episode of IT: Welcome to Derry. The horror felt a bit tryhard, and the rest of it felt a bit not-try-hard-enough. I guess I came in hoping for something that could hook me with the first episode, like Stranger Things, or even Castle Rock. I don't feel hooked. I don't exactly hate it, but I don't know if I'll keep watching.

What I really want to watch is some nice, grimy sci-fi, especially something cyberpunk or adjacent, or unimaginably far-future mind-bending space opera. The last show I really fell for was The Expanse, and Foundation is pretty intriguing, but less impactful for me. Has anyone watched Dune: Prophecy? Any good? Anyone have recommendations for something cyberpunk? Is that new Ghost in the Shell series worth a look?

Dune: Prophecy is really really good. I love it as much as Dune. Have you seen the 3 Body Problem? How about Altered Carbon? You might enjoy those.

While not really matching the same atmospheres as above, if you enjoy animation, maybe you'll like Undone, Scavengers Reign, or Pantheon.

I'm also desperately seeking for something to fill "The Expanse" and well, now the "Wheel of Time" voids.

Thanks for the recommendations! I've watched 3 Body Problem, and Scavengers Reign. Scavengers Reign was great. Reminds me I should check out Common Side Effects, by the same animators. I'd forgotten about Altered Carbon. I know it's one of the victims of Netflix's infamous premature cancellations. Did the ending leave too much hanging? Undone and Pantheon both sound interesting, and I'll definitely look into them.

If you have access to Apple TV, it's got t a lot of great sci-fi. I mentioned Foundation, which really is an ambitiously epic space opera, and at least a contender to possibly fill in where The Expanse left off. I suppose you can't go wrong with Asimov. I also really enjoyed Murderbot. Lighthearted, but with high stakes, and Alexander Skarsgård is really great in it (so many Skarsgårds in all these things. ) Plus all of Apples big-buzz shows -- Severance, Silo, Pluribus.

I actually didn't watch season 2 of Altered Carbon so not sure. The first season is pretty self contained iirc. Let me know if you like Undone or Pantheon!

Yes! I looooove Foundation. It's just getting better and better with each season. Silo is also getting better with each season, though I've enjoyed it from the start. Severance was good, but was more art house than scifi to me - scratched a different itch, I guess. Pluribus has a similar problem in that it's very good, but it just doesn't scratch that scifi/fantasy itch. I crave big storylines with seemingly convoluted connections. The show itself doesn't even have to be brilliant. For example, I love(d) Defiance (maybe you would also like), which I can admit had quite a few problems. But damn! the world building was just so good and all the threads everywhere was so nice.

Murderbot was on my radar, but saw it was an action comedy so that kinda put me off. I'll check it out based on your recommendation though!

Ah, have you seen Devs? You might also like that show. It's a miniseries, but it's very very good.

Try SILO -it's excellent! Very grimy, quite cyberpunk and great acting!
