If this is a DP, I apologize! All the other threads I found hadn't been used in months, so I decided to start a new one...

What book/series are you currently reading?

I recently went through my shelves and purged all of the books I had read and made a stack of my 'to read,' and it's kinda overwhelming :yikes:

I just finished the Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray, and my coworker gave me the Beautiful Creatures series (I started, but wasn't feeling it immediately). I also have a few motivational books and a biography of Jackie Kennedy Onassis...soooo just curious to see what everyone else has on their list!

I am usually reading 4 or 5 books at a time, and I would share them all but I feel it is better if I focus on one at a time.

The best one I am reading at the moment is one of the latest and most complete biographies of Empress Dowager Cixi of China. She was chosen as a sixth rank concubine to Emperor Xianfeng of the Qing Dinasty when she was only 16 years old and by 25 through a successful coup she became the Empress of China. She ruled China for 60 years was responsible for it's industrialization, brought peace and prosperity to her people.

:D Pearl S. Buck wrote a book about her called Imperial Woman! I loved it. I'm on a non-fiction kick right now and you're tempting me.

Speaking of, I also usually have a bunch of books going at once so I can choose based on my mood, but my favorite right now is a revisionist history of Korea called "Korea's Place in the Sun."

Love the book thread! Can't wait to see what everyone posts. >o<

I just started reading A Series of Unfortunate Events because I never finished the series the first time around and with the show out now I feel like I need to.

I just finished the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini, if you like dragons, magic, appropriate for young adults gore and romance, and a fairly easy to follow story it's pretty great.

What a great topic! I love to read.
I read several books at same time usually and have them on my ipad. I am very book hungry. I remember absolutely everythung read.
So...
currently i read in no partcular order :
1/novel SINNERS by jackie collins a fun light sexy read which i usually read late at night omg love to read it
2/ NEVER GIVE UP donald trump which i just started
3/ DEMONIC ann coulter - her books are absolutely genius and i am addicted my only complain these are more expensive than other books wish she lower the price but cannot resist so dar got two this is second one am reading
4/ THE CROWD gustave le bon - a free book lol which i found out about from ann coulter demonic and started to read and is difficult to read so i read it every few days a little bit but is kinda brilliant
5/KISS AND TELL shannon tweed playboy autobiography which i got myself as a reward for great camming day and is better than i expected
this is about as much as i can handle at once but i gave new books lined up strangely during holiday season am very drawn to different century novels which are amazing and free most classics are on ibooks i recommend

I haven´t read a book in years, too busy in life trying to earn a decent lifestyle since moving to Spain. Loving the warmth, not escorting much now, so lots of sunbathing, filming and working on the laptop...

any good books come out on film, so I get to enjoy them in the evening with my partner in amongst the party and work, however, my neighbour reads most nights, she´s into most gripping drama and thrillers!

Enjoy your reading!

Anything by Neil Gaiman.
My favorite is American Gods.
I Am Legend is also a good read, just don't get your hopes up based on the movie.

I just finished the 37th Parallel by Ben Mezrich. By far the worst book I've ever read by him so disappointing as it really sounded interesting.

I have What If by Randall Munroe and Bad Days in History by Michael Farquhar in transit from Amazon hopefully they get here by Monday. I don't know which one I'm going to start with though.

I just finished reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Very good book and it has a quite enjoyable Netflix series that I would recommend to just about anyone. The book obviously has more exposition so it creates deeper characters far faster and better, but the series is still a favorite. I'm also slowly getting through Stephen King's masterpiece Misery, I say slowly because it's hard to read. It's so visceral and... vivid that it's like reading torture porn. King is really in his element in the book and his writing is superb in it. I'm currently actively reading The Magicians books, aka adult Harry Potter.

Did it seem to you like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell ended really abruptly without typing up a lot of loose ends? I still loved the book, but I think Clarke spent something like a decade writing it and it seemed to me like she got bored and the last fifty pages were a whirlwind of "I need to end this now."

Completely agreed that the ending is abrupt. The world she managed to make is so deep that it feels inadequate to just go "the end" to me.

Indomitable: the second in W. C. Bauers's Chronciles of Promise Paen, character-driven military science fiction featuring a female space marine.

Promise Paen, captain of Victor Company's mechanized armored infantry, is back for another adventure protecting the Republic of Aligned Worlds.

Lieutenant Paen barely survived her last encounter with the Lusitanian Empire. She's returned home to heal. But the nightmares won't stop. And she's got a newly reconstituted unit of green marines to whip into shape before they deploy. If the enemies of the RAW don't kill them first, she just might do the job herself.

Light-years away, on the edge of the Verge, a massive vein of rare ore is discovered on the mining planet of Sheol, which ignites an arms race and a proxy war between the Republic and the Lusitanians. Paen and Victor Company are ordered to Sheol, to reinforce the planet and hold it at all costs.

On the eve of their deployment, a friendly fire incident occurs, putting Paen's career in jeopardy and stripping her of her command. When the Lusitanians send mercenaries to raid Sheol and destabilize its mining operations, matters reach crisis levels. Disgraced and angry, Promise is offered one shot to get back into her mechsuit. But she'll have to jump across the galaxy and possibly storm the gates of hell itself.

A great half movie, the second part being drivel.

I'm reading Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow because I like the musical, haha.
Have only seen bits of the musical, found Ron Chernow's biography engrossing. I'd like to suggest “Founding Brothers” for a more general view of the founders, reads like a novel and is more friendly to Madison.

My dreams are all basically Robinson Crusoe at the start and build from there, wonder where they'd kick off if I hadn't read it? Formative fiction for me

...do audio books count?
Of course! Love audiobooks, and radio dramatizations. Like “I Am Legend” by the BBC with Angus McInnes. Also lots of public domain books read by volunteers at librivox.org

Just finished the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness.
Started Inkheart this weekend. I'm only letting myself read while my clips export. Otherwise I would just read for 16 hours a day, every day.

There are tons of great free book resources out there for people without Apple products, too. On the standard internet, there is Project Gutenberg and Archive.org. For Android devices, the Kindle app has a massive amount of public domain books available for free. I believe much of it is available thanks to Gutenberg, actually. I'm less familiar with Nook's free offerings, but I've found I've had the least trouble getting Nook's ePub files downloaded from other sites to actually work as expected, and haven't had as much luck doing the same with Kindle files that weren't received directly from the Kindle store. For audio books, there is LibriVox. It's all volunteer, so you're not going to get the same consistency in voice work as you would on, say, Audible, but I've listened to and enjoyed many works from the site.

I love apple products so i use ipad. Wanted to add that they constantly also have deals and i recommend to not buy brand new books unless u truly must but wait a bit like a month for the discount and u can have two books for same price then. Also i managed to buy 3 jackie collins books for 99cents each on christmas and these are now again $7. So anyone with an apple gadget just keep going there and hunt to get your library together also they have great colllection of comic books. Anything u see low price that u even think u might want to read in the future just buy cause next week is back to regular price is how it works.

Reading the Dark Tower Series again for the upcoming Dark Tower movie with Matthew McConaughey as the Man In Black. This says "unofficial trailer" but this is NOT a fan made trailer.

For free stuff, try BookBub.com for daily emails of free or really cheap e-books.

I use Calibre to manage my e-books and strip the copy protection and convert from Kindle formats to the Nook's epub format. It does a good job of conversion and may even fix those you're having trouble with. It'll also take the time limit off of library books so you don't have to rush to read them.

Right now I'm reading Ben-Hur.

In the same thread--do you guys keep the books you have read, or do you pass them on?
I keep the ones I will reread but usually donate or give away the others. But I tend to borrow a lot from the library so the books I do buy are keepers. (And I keep all my comics/graphic novels!)

I'm a pack rat of sorts so I keep every book I buy and loan them out to friends or family.

I'm reading "how to get your shit together" by sarah knight.

... this is where my life is right now hahaha

(and regarding the keeping books question - i used to. i now pass nearly all of them on (i love those mini curbside libraries) except for very very special books. But i don't buy paper anymore - everything is kindle unless it has pictures that i need to see (art books etc)
