Do you think that sexual objectification is real?

Interesting the definitions of objectification. I would have said that I objectify the shit out of many cam models, porn actresses and strippers, in that while I'm in the moment of consensually consuming their services, I'm often not seeing and appreciating a full and complete human being. But by @IsabellaSnow 's definition, maybe this isn't quite objectification, since I'm certainly not harassing them, and am definitely simultaneously conscious of the fact that I'm immensely appreciative of the work that they, the human that I don't really know and may never know, are doing to create the fantasy that I'm enjoying. In all cases I quite enjoy the conversation afterward, which is definitely with the non-object human performer.

All art, still, animated, or performance, inherently involves elements of objectification, and any erotic or sexual art has elements of sexual objectification. Sometimes art is inadvertent, and so sometimes we appreciate wonder, beauty, eroticism, etc. in our daily experiences, and this might or might not be objectification. If we can appropriately appreciate our reaction to what we experience without acting as if the (potentially inadvertent) performer is less than a full and complete human being, I don't see harm in that.

Almost answered you Guy. Got a response ready, but I am not posting it just for you to drop your end of the discussion. You go first; tell me what you thing about my question that preceded that...
Is there anything wrong with non consensual objectification?

There is a fundamental concern that the content of such magazines normalises the treatment of women as sexual objects.
http://pornharmsresearch.com/2013/12/talking-points-sexualized-media-kids/
Young people (<18 years old) who have been exposed to sexualized media (both pornography and sexualized TV) have an increased likelihood of:
Having less progressive gender role attitudes
Having less progressive gender role attitudes
Being more likely to see women as sex objects
Being more accepting of sexual harassment
Engaging in more sexual harassment perpetration
Engaging in forced sex

“Like it or not, porn is here and it is harmful. In this controversial film, award-winning filmmaker Justin Hunt dissects the impact of pornography on societies around the globe, from how it affects the brain of the individual, to how modern technology leads to greater exposure to youth, to watching it literally tear a family apart,” the synopsis reads.

Well if you believe media representations like magazines, tv, movies, webcam sites, etc... are harming society in some way, you are not alone.

An interesting 2 minute vid that raises some interesting questions about women's sometimes flawed logic and inconsistent views on the whole topic of sexual objectification.

Women are going to have to be taught that this is not acceptable.

Problem solved.

How dare he not post a link.

Guy, you obviously need some professional help that is beyond the realm of this forum and sincerely hope you seek it out for your own benefit.

Self-objectification for the sake of empowerment is no less demeaning to a woman than when a man objectifies her for pleasure.

If women objectify themselves on the road to empowerment, it is not they who are empowered, it is the consumer of the object to which they have reduced themselves.

A woman who finds power in self-objectification is only powerful so long as her “object” is appealing to someone else.

Women must not reduce their bodies to a form of currency in order to purchase power. When they do, they demean themselves.

Women are holistically beautiful and powerful. They don’t need to wield sexuality in an effort to be beautiful or powerful.

Encourage the women around you. Empower the women around you.

Men, when women make currency of their bodies, don’t exchange for it. The more we reject bodies as currency, the less value self-objectification has.

Refuse the exchange of a women’s body as currency and seek to empower women for who they are.
What do you think of this view of objectification @Guy? I think the writer makes a very interesting point.

What I see the most on MFC is people denying a model's subjectivity. Some people just forget they're dealing with another human being. This happens allot in consumer orinted sectors.

Like Doctors, people in consumer orinted jobs tend to need a healthy emotional detachment. When you deal with hundreds, if not thousands of people per day. If your attached to every person, it's going to takes a tremendous toll.

Take your pick, objectification vs detachment.

Sexual objectification is the act of treating a person as a mere instrument of sexual pleasure. Objectification more broadly means treating a person as a commodity or an object without regard to their personality or dignity.

As a human adult that visits porn sites... with presumably more functioning brain cells than a jellyfish, how could you even question that sexual objectification isn't real?

I'm really looking forward to the day that the great classic The Wizard of Oz is remade with a woman who appears from behind the curtain - with her subtle vulnerabilities and all. In that sense, I think many would believe that the curtain hides more greatness than it projects. But the greater question would be: Would she have to be beautiful for it to work?
I think this is a much trickier question to answer, and just as likely to change anything.

I did like the examination of the different mags and the images therein projected. As I read along I anticipated very accurately what images might populate the pages of a mag aimed at Lesbians. God I love Lesbians.

I don't know who this woman is, but she is beautiful and white so I assume she is a feminist. She seems to take a dim view of the whole objectification thing.

Yes it is real. And everyone is guilty of it. I don't think it is inherently bad, if you are respectful. But there will always be assholes.

That is Lauren Southern. She is a moderate conservative and identifies as an attack helicopter. Even though I don't agree with all of her political beliefs and opinions, she makes great counterpoints.

Figures.

I should have guessed being from the South she was conservative.

PLOT TWIST. She is Canadian.
wtf???

Shit getting too confusing. Nationality, fluid gender, race (when it is convenient)...I just cant keep track of things anymore. Something needs to be done.

How about this; everybody who thinks objectification is a bad thing, put on one of these little hats.

When somebody starts out with "The Truth about so and so" you know you need to be skeptical.... but when she drifted off about tools... I started to think about future weekend projects.

What was this topic about anyway?

Oh ya, and once again Guy starts a topic... replies with links, yet can't seem to muster up any original thought beyond one sentence.

I find Guys topics interesting. At least he's polite and does not get his kicks from being a dick :)

Guy has mentioned many times in various threads that he has Asperger's and struggles with the social skills to express himself as eloquently as others can. Cut him some slack. If he feels the articles make the points he wishes to convey, which he can't express directly himself then that's OK. If you don't want to read it that's OK too but just let it go. You know how Guy is so there's no need to keep banging on about it.

I like guys threads, sure some don't go anywhere but lots of others have sparked pages and pages of discussions. So keep em coming Guy.

I actually enjoy Guy's posts- I wasn't aware he had aspergers - I have two family members with aspergers and adhd runs rampant in my family

maybe this is why I like is non-linear take on things and relational points to others views (links/articles)

Please pardon my ignorance and thank you for finally helping me understand some of his posts since I'm not a daily visitor.
